Pride

Pride, according to the dictionary is:

a high or inordinate opinion of one’s own dignity, importance, merit, or superiority, whether as cherished in the mind or as displayed in bearing, conduct, etc.

Pretty disgusting, isn’t it? Well, we’re all full of pride, if you can admit it.

It’s funny but when you see this in other people you can say, “what does he/she have to be so proud of?” or “What a snob!”

But the fact is, pride was the first sin. Satan was thrown from heaven when he wanted to be greater than God. He was a beautiful angel! He had much authority in heaven! But, he wanted more. He wanted God’s throne! That, my dears, is pride. Anyone, even an angel, who feels he is great enough to take God’s throne is very proud!

When Eve, and then Adam wanted to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil after the serpent tempted Eve. What was that tree? It had God’s knowledge of good and evil. So the very first man and the very first woman were full of pride. They wanted God’s knowledge. Pride was the first sin. And it brought down the whole human race.

In the Old Testament, the word ‘pride’ is communicated in several ways:

גאון
Translated, ‘pride’, the Hebrew means majesty, like God’s majesty. (first definition in the Hebrew lexicon).
So then, pride is putting on the majesty that belongs to God?

בגבה לב
Pride is also translated from these words which mean ‘height of his heart’.

אם יעלה לשמי
This translates to pride also: If he goes up to the heights of the heavens.

רשע כגבה אפו בל ידרש אין אלהים כל מזמותיו                                                                                             Psalms 10:4 uses the phrase, “height of the nose” to mean pride. The word for ‘nose’ could also mean ‘anger’ but the translation ‘height of nose’ which you see well in some people. Some actually elevate their head in pride and the thing that you can readily see elevated is the nose.

Arrogance or pride is a stubborn character flaw. Ever hear “Pride comes before a fall”? It’s true. When you begin feeling like you know it all, are better than others, or becoming like God, you will fall. You’ll find yourself in a mess of mistakes. Then you’ll see exactly how great you are. (the answer is: not very).

Now, here’s the interesting part. What is the biggest human pride?

I think it’s humanism.

What’s humanism?                                                                                                                   Philosophy . a variety of ethical theory and practice that emphasizes reason, scientific inquiry, and human  fulfillment in the natural world and often rejects the importance of belief in God.

There you have it. We can reason, study, learn man’s theories in math, science. We can further the body of knowledge in all of these things. But when we decide we don’t need God anymore, that we can do it all on our own, we’ve gone beyond ourselves into the realm of God. We are trying to take his throne. It’s how man fell in the first place.

Watch out for your pride!
