I knew an old man. He had lost his family in the Holocaust.
He was sincerely overjoyed when they caught one of the last remaining Nazis to put on trial. The old man said he was going to be there for it. He had to go. He had to see this ‘monster’.
During the trial the old man started to cry. He cried without restraint all during the trial.
When it was over someone asked the old man why he was crying.
He said,”I thought this man was a monster. I wanted to see this monster get what he deserved.
But when I looked at him, I realized he was just a man. And that man could be any man. He could have been me.
Any of us are capable of that evil.
