Buckley…reiterated his distaste for Vidal as an “evangelist for bisexuality”:
“The man who in his essays proclaims the normalcy of his affliction, and in his art the desirability of it, is not to be confused with the man who bears his sorrow quietly. The addict is to be pitied and even respected, not the pusher.”

On this one, I was in complete agreement with Buckley. In person, I found to Vidal to be a remarkably unpleasant person. I had no appreciation for his writing either, which I found trite and boring.

You met Gore Vidal in person?
That’s surprising.
Thought you might be traveling in different circles of people. But I agree in what I’ve read about him. The word superficial came to mind back then.

No I never met him personally, although I met Buckley when he spoke at UC Irvine. I saw Vidal speak at UC Irvine and he put the whole audience to sleep. When he spoke to some English majors interesting in writing he spent a good portion of the class berating them for not having read several of his books. I friend of mine at the time who was an honors English student told me, “I would have never read his sXXX (rhymes with spit) before he came here and after this, I sure as h— (rhymes with bell) won’t even consider reading anything that sybarite writes.” She apparently shared the views of the vast majority of her class. When I asked the professor about Vidal’s meeting with the students, the professor (who, by the way is a dedicated patron of the political left), said, “He’s a prick.” He also said I could quote him.

Obviously Buckley really effected Vidal. Found what he wrote when Buckley died:
“RIP WFB — in hell.”
The man was full of hatred!
Didn’t I read somewhere that he was uncle or related in some way to Albert Gore?

I recall Buckley coming on the Johnny Carson show and just loved to hear him speak. He sure had tons of wisdom.

I remember him back then too, Pepper. He was conservative and not ashamed of it.
Did you know O’Rielly is his nephew? (I think that’s right)

No I had no idea O’Reilly is his nephew. He sure didn’t take after him with this “sitting on the fence constantly about a lot of issues.

And I agree, he sure isn’t the conservative that Bill Buckley was. God rest his should. He was a good man. Never gave up his faith though he didn’t wear it on his sleeve.
